Portraits of Life - The Art of Storytelling

Two Artists | One Show

Many Stories

So many stories to tell and things to talk about. Life is a constant source of inspiration for both of us... Hence our show title "Portraits of Life - The Art of Storytelling."

When my Artist friend April Rimpo invited me to plan an exhibit with her, I was thrilled. We had talked for years about doing a two-person show, so this was a long-awaited opportunity.

If you think I am a planner (let me refer you my 3-part series of articles on artists and art show-planning: part one of my three-part series followed by part 2 and part 3), then make room for April. And I do mean this in a good way!

I found out that I have much to learn from her. April definitely gets an A+ in the Planning Department. I probably still get an A in the planning department, but we are doing our best to share the load and plan great show. Both of us are bringing our best art and our best game forward. One thing we have in common is that neither of us compromises on our Art.

Highlighting Differences

Accentuating Common Ground

So, how did we go about planning for our show? We began by honestly discussing our strengths and what we loved about the other's style, background, art, and methods. Afterwards, we discussed how our styles complemented the other and we then "divided" tasks between us accordingly - in order to conquer our myriad to-do lists!

Mind you... This is all in addition to creating new work for this show. While some of the work might be familiar from blog posts or newsletters, none of it will have ever been exhibited at this venue. We think you are in for a treat!

 The Magic of Collaboration

As a result of many discussions and brainstorming sessions, April and I realized we each have something unique to offer in a co-taught seminar. Each of us and our individual creative path has led us to different experiences we can share with other artists. As a result, we will be co-instructors for a Creative Art Coaching Session. Information on the session follows. True to our 'divide and conquer' philosophy, we co-built the curriculum and April is hosting our class sign-up sheet and Launch page.

Following is the information you will need to help you decide if this opportunity is right for you. Click on this Creative Art Coaching link to register online and pay for the class.

Creative ART Coaches April Rimpo & Elaine Weiner-Reed

Combined, these credentialed artists offer over 75 years of artistic professional experience. Their different styles and backgrounds results in an exciting teaching experience. Their goal is to help others problem-solve and achieve their goals.

Creative ART Coaching is designed to be an  interactive session focused on helping serious artists looking to bring their art and their art business to a new level.

If you feel stuck in achieving your professional goals, whether it is increasing your exposure through shows and exhibitions, planning a solo exhibition, building a portfolio, finding a gallery, or understanding what people mean when they say they are looking for “a consistent body of work,” our goal is to provide you with insights on how to get beyond your current hurdles.

A maximum of 7 students will be accepted into the coaching session. Each person will provide from two to four questions/areas of interest they would like discussed during the session. The entire group will be present throughout the full 2.5 hours of the coaching session. For our team coaching to be most effective, we ask each participant to focus on a particular aspect or specific goal of your art business where you desire assistance. Overly broad or generic questions have been found to be less-beneficial to every participant. We want optimum benefits for all.

If you know me and April, you know we will give you our ALL and the very best information and ideas we can give. Mentoring and helping others is a core value for both of us.

Come prepared to focus on your specific art business questions, challenges, or goals.
We look forward to welcoming you to our show and in our new class!

Meanwhile, both artists are busy creating new work for this show and continuing their ongoing series. Let us know when to expect you...

I Can Paint A Song

The Music In Me

© 2019 Elaine Weiner-Reed - "Singin' Like An Angel" (Inspired by Vanessa Collier)

I believe that Art and Music are universal languages.

Both build bridges and unite across cultures and around the globe.

Music has always been a part of my life and has always been entwined with my art. Jazz greats like Miles Davis, Maynard Ferguson, Sonny Rollins, Claude Nougaro, and Herbie Hancock generally accompany me in my studio. Sometimes, I’ll be creating to Rock or Blues, the Beatles or Funky music, but overall, my rhythm syncs with the heart of Jazz. Those jazz roots, some 45 years ingrained, are what makes the most recent collision of my work with classical stringed instruments all the more intriguing to me.

Dreams became reality. Up until last year, my exposure to classical music has been minimal. Then, on 6 June 2018 during my solo exhibition at Maryland Hall, three musicians created live structured improvisational works inspired by individual pieces of my exhibited artwork. As Rogue Collective musicians (Alexa Cantalupo, Natalie Spehar, Kaitlin Moreno) moved through the Gallery finding their next art focal piece, their unique brand of classical music filled the rooms, lifting our hearts. Guests were transported as the musicians simultaneously created and played live, improvising new works titled identical to the piece of art that intrigued them.

My dream and my Creative Collaboration InitiativeEvery Painting is a Song (EPIAS)” was a natural evolution for me in terms of my personal journey. This short video will clearly explain my concept. To date, we do not yet have music videos of each piece, but Rogue Collective created music to the following a) Paintings - Talking Story, Chance Encounters, The Gathering – Still Waiting, Mirror, Mirror, and b) Sculpture - Resurrection.

To find out more about how music has taken me in new directions and inspired a new sculpture series "Visual Acoustics," I invite you to read my recently published article "The Music in Me" on the Blog Live An Artful Life! How does music and art inspire YOU?

To close for now... I do not know what music genre this will fall into, but following is a first stanza or chorus of a song I am writing...  My days of self-limiting are behind me! Take the leap of faith with me and fear no art!

 Singing - My Way

I can’t sing and I can’t string,
But I can hum along.
I can’t fly, but I can soar,
And I can paint a Song.
